What makes Lake Nokomis Cranberries different from the others?
Our cranberries are grown with lots of love and are natural! They are always fresh and are priced reasonably.
If I eat cranberries all the time, will I turn into one?
We've heard that but haven't seen it happen yet - but you're welcome to put it to the test!!
Can cranberries be frozen?
Yes. They can be frozen up to 2 years and used in baking or juice & relish recipes. Rinse berries, remove debris, pat dry & seal in zip-lock bags or container of your choice. To prevent clumping remove as much water as possible.OR, they could be frozen in tap water & thawed when ready to use after discarding the water.
Can cranberries be eaten raw?
Yes. They are tart & berry delicious. Especially when dipped in chocolate. YUM!
What are the white cranberries?
The sun turns the cranberries red.White berries need to sunbathe more. They taste the same & turn red when cooked.
Can cranberries be dehydrated?
Yes, but the process is different than sweeter softer fruit. Just experiment until you get a formula that works for you. Here are some tips from folks who stopped by the farm who had success dehydrating cranberries: Cut cranberries in half. Dip into a simple syrup. Drain & place in dehydrator.
Why should I eat cranberries?
Like so many other berries, cranberries are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants. The naturally tart berry prohibits the growth of several types of food born bacteria. Research has proven the cranberry to be beneficial in fighting tooth decay. This versital juice can be sweetened & mixed with other juices to create delicious, refreashing, healthy drinks.
Do all cranberries come from Oceanspray?
NO. There are many companies who buy and sell cranberries. Just like there are many farms who grow & sell other fruit and vegetables which end up being packed under different labels.
Do cranberries grow on trees or bushes?
Neither. Cranberries are vines which produce every year. Some cranberry beds are over 50 years old. They also grow wild in wet areas called bogs. On farms they grow in beds.
Do cranberries grow in water?
NO. They grow in soil and are watered as needed like other fruits and vegetables. When harvested the beds are flooded. The fruit is then beaten loose from the vine and it floats to the surface. It can then be easily sucked into a hopper using pumping equipment. Cranberries would suffocate under water.
How long does it take to grow a cranberry and how are they planted??
A cranberry bed is planted with vines which have been cut from older good producing cranberry beds.There are many varieties of cranberries. The vines are mowed and bailed. They are then scattered evenly over the prepared soil and tapped into the soil with a machine.The new planting must be watered as needed. A few weeks after planting new roots will have grown into the soil & new green growth will appear on the brown vines. It will be 3-5 years before a crop can be harvested. Beds continue to produce fruit for more than fifty years
